History

Our congregation was founded during the High Holy Day season of 1886 by some visionary leaders. For more than a century, Congregation Temple Israel has served the St. Louis Jewish community by continuing to wrestle with those issues that matter most to us and exploring what it means to be constantly reforming Judaism.

Its clergy have educated generations of St. Louisans, comforted them in times of need, celebrated with them in times of joy and motivated them to serve and bless the entire St. Louis community. With nearly 1,000 member families, a dynamic professional staff and magnificent facilities, our story is far from complete.

Each day we make new history for our families. We have a rich tradition of supporting both Jewish and interfaith causes such as feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, mentoring school children, transporting seniors and many more worthwhile causes.

Our congregation is a spiritual family helping one another and reaching out to those in need. We would love to have you be a part of our family. We call ourselves "Congregation" Temple Israel because we are so much more than a building. We are the sum total of the lives we touch and serve.
