Brief History of Temple Israel
Congregation Temple Israel was founded between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur of 1886. On Rosh Hashanah that year, Rabbi Solomon H. Sonneschein was rabbi of Shaare Emeth of St. Louis. By Kol Nidre, he was the rabbi of a newly created Temple Israel. Those Ten Days of Repentance must have been filled with lively board meetings. Congregation Temple Israel has served the St. Louis Jewish community for more than a century since those rough and tumble days a few blocks west of the Mississippi River.
Its clergy have educated generations of St. Louisans, comforted them in times of need, celebrated with them in times of joy and motivated them to serve and bless the entire St. Louis community. Blessed with nearly 1,400 member families, a dynamic professional staff and magnificent facilities, our story is far from complete.
Each day we make new history for our families. We have a rich tradition of supporting both Jewish and interfaith causes, such as feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, mentoring school children, transporting seniors and many more worthwhile causes.
Our congregation is a spiritual family helping one another and reaching out to those in need. We would love to have you be a part of our history. We call ourselves "Congregation" Temple Israel because we are so much more than a building. We are the sum total of the lives we touch and serve.
