Shabbat Worship

Shabbat services are held each Friday at 7:30 p.m. and each Saturday at 11 a.m. In addition, each month there are special opportunities for informal, multi-generational and family worship.

Sabbath worship is a key element in developing a sense of community at Temple Israel. Every effort is made to ensure that the worship experience is warm, meaningful, and intellectually stimulating. Throughout the year, sermons, guest speakers, and special programs will cover a broad range of topics.

The Temple provides free baby-sitting service during every Shabbat evening service (except those that begin at 6 p.m. see below). Babysitting is also provided for High Holy Days services with advance reservations.

We believe in the importance of family worship, with grandparents, parents and children coming to the Temple to celebrate Shabbat and the festivals throughout the year. For this reason, special services and times have been prepared with the needs of families in mind. Festival services are especially inviting for children.

TOT SHABBAT

On the first Friday of the month during the school year, a bring-your-own dinner precedes the Tot Shabbat services held in the preschool playground (weather permitting) or in the muscle room. These services are designed for families with young children. A picnic dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. with services following at 6:30 p.m. The musical Shabbat service is conducted by our educator and rabbis. Blessings and gifts are given to children celebrating their birthdays that month.

CASUAL SHABBAT

On the first Friday of the month during the school year, and on all Fridays in July and August, we offer a more casual atmosphere. Casual dress is welcome. Formal sermons are replaced by Torah discussions involving the entire congregation; in addition, parts of the liturgy are explained throughout the service.

FAMILY SHABBAT - SHABBAT B'SHIR (Shabbat in Song)

Generally held on the second Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m., this worship service is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for families and people of all ages. This entirely musical service includes melodies taught in the religious school and featured throughout the year, and is led by a number of different members of our professional staff and lay leaders. The rabbis, educator, children's choir, and lay leaders play music, tell stories, and teach throughout this lively and participatory service. Throughout the year, various musicians and Jewish leaders from around the world lead us in song and worship as well.

SUMMER SERVICES

Throughout July and August, Friday evening worship services are held in the May Chapel. Each month has a special theme for the sermon/discussion portion of the service. There are generally no Saturday morning services during July and August.
