Tikkun Olam Committee

Mitzvah Day at Temple Israel

The Tikkun Olam Committee brings Temple Israel members together to perform deeds of tsedakah (justice) and gemilut chasadim (acts of loving-kindness).

  • Give-A-Meal-A-Month program: Temple members anonymously provide one bag of groceries each month to those served by the Jewish Food Pantry or Hosea House. Meals purchased through the Ernest and Dorothea A. Wolf Social Service Fund are provided to those in need at Covenant/Chai Houses.

  • Thanksgiving for Persons in Need: each year, the committee hosts a Thanksgiving Dinner for those in need, a program which serves 500 men, women, and children from area shelters.

  • Mitzvah Day: held in the fall, Mitzvah Day unites the temple family in various efforts to benefit the St. Louis area.

  • Faith Beyond Walls: T.I. is a charter member of Faith Beyond Walls, an interfaith volunteer program jointly sponsored by the St. Louis Clergy Coalition and the Interfaith Partnership of Metropolitan St. Louis.

  • Habitat for Humanity: as a member of the Jewish Social Action Network, T.I. sponsors home building projects for those in need of shelter.

  • Million Mom March-Presents programs to make families aware of the dangers of unlocked guns and unregulated gun sales.

  • Cell Phone Recycling: T.I is a collection point for old cell phones which will be used to benefit victims of domestic violence. The program accepts any old wireless phones, including batteries and chargers, and reprograms them to dial 911 or a non-emergency number like a domestic violence shelter.
  • High Holy Days Toiletries Collection: each year worshipers are asked to bring domations of toiletries for distribution to our local food pantries.
